Behaviour

Sometimes our dogs display behaviours which are incompatible with the human world in which they live. Many of these stem from the type of breed, early learning and a misunderstanding by owners of what to do about it.
TV shows people that a dog can be cured in 30 minutes if you are confident and strict. Sadly, this is not the case. Many problems are deep rooted and can take months to improve, sometimes only being managed rather than cured.
Under the Talk to the Paw Code of Practice, all behaviour work is carried out on vet referral only. This is to ensure that your dog has no physical problem which could be the cause of the behaviour but also to ensure that I work alongside your vet where necessary such as in cases where drug therapy may be recommended in conjunction with behaviour training.
Using a system known as EMRA I will assess you and your dog at home.
This examines
- Your dog’s normal mood state over the day.
- Your dog’s emotional state during the behaviour.
- Why your dog is continuing to behave in a certain way.
After assessment I will put a programme together for treatment. Some clients may only need to be seen once, others intensively for a period of time. You will not find me suggesting you become a strong pack leader or that you punish your dog, it is not my belief that this works. A great deal of patience may be required. Telephone support is always available when you need it.
As I treat each case individually, I do not like to use labels but the following list may give you an idea of some behaviours which I can help with
- Fears and phobias
- Separation problems
- Food aggression
- Guarding
- Persistant barking
- Chasing
- Snapping/nipping/biting
- Problems with other dogs
- Self mutilation
